Going in circles is now a good thing – review by Sitra

Over 24+ hours and 20+ sessions, the WCEF+Climate built up the agenda for circular climate action.

Building upon 2020’s successful WCEFonline event, the WCEF+Climate showed the circular economy is essential to tackle the pollution, biodiversity and climate crises. The Netherlands and The Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra hosted the event in April which brought together leaders from the climate and circular economy communities.

Executive Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans said: “There is actually only one concept you need to remember and that is: we need to start living within planetary boundaries.”

It is clear that as we turn our attention to COP26 in Glasgow later this year, the world will need something more to get on track for the emission reductions we need – and that something could be the circular economy. Executive Secretary of UNFCCC Patricia Espinosa confirmed: “Accelerating the shift to a circular economy is essential to achieve the climate goals agreed.”

The next annual circular economy event, the WCEF2021, will be held 13-15 September. We need to expedite all actions on the road to the next global COP negotiations, both on climate and biodiversity.
